APB’s Power List

Meet the private bankers helping to shape the city’s booming wealth industry

With Hong Kong’s private wealth management industry inching towards the HK$10 trillion mark, APB’s Power List Hong Kong seeks to identify and profile the city’s 20 most influential private bankers. Inclusion is not dependent upon book size but on expertise in the craft of private banking, dedication to serving UHNW clientele, and efforts to elevate the Hong Kong private wealth industry, which puts these bankers head and shoulders above the crowd.

Adeline Chien

head of wealth management Hong Kong domestic & South East Asia Hong Kong, UBS Global Wealth Management

Chien stands as a pillar of excellence among private bankers in Hong Kong. With a wealth of experience spanning decades, she leads UBS Global Wealth Management in the city, responsible for formulating business strategy and overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Hong Kong domestic market.

Joining UBS Global Wealth Management in 1995 as a client advisor, Chien later assumed the role of desk head for the Hong Kong team. Following a pivotal role as an executive director at Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management from 2004, Chien rejoined UBS in 2008 and in 2010 became cluster head for the UHNW team. After departing UBS again and spending two-year tenures at EFG Bank and Barclays Private Bank, she returned as country team head in 2014.

In 2018, Chien was appointed as regional market manager for the Hong Kong domestic team. By April 2019, she ascended to the position of head of Hong Kong domestic and South East Asia in February 2020.

Beyond her professional achievements, Chien participates in industry charity and social events, especially those supporting female empowerment and sustainability. She also owns several Japanese and Italian restaurants in the city, one of which is recognised with a Michelin one-star rating.

Her commitment to mentoring young talent is evident as she emphasises creating a positive and collaborative workplace culture while prioritising the mental health and well-being of team members. Alan Wong

UHNW desk head for Hong Kong market, HSBC Global Private Banking

Having joined HSBC over 23 years ago, Wong has embraced a non-traditional path on his way to becoming one of Hong Kong’s top private bankers. Having started out as a commercial and corporate banker, Wong only joined HSBC Global Private Banking in 2021.

Despite role rotations being common at HSBC, Wong swiftly rose to lead a team of UHNW bankers and became a renowned UHNW banker himself within a mere three-year timeframe.

His success story is directly attributable to his diverse experience at the bank. Starting as a management trainee in Corporate, Institutional Banking, and Markets, he has since held 12 roles primarily focused on client coverage and people management across Commercial Banking and Global Private Banking. Following two secondments to the UK and Macau, he transitioned to GPB seeking a new career path in wealth management.

With such broad exposure to various business lines, Wong’s experience exemplifies why he is the go-to banker for any client that truly wants to get an in-depth understanding of all the best the entire HSBC group has to offer.

Throughout his entire stint with the bank, however, he has derived most motivation when a position has catalysed him to drive inspirational changes.

“I am glad that I have been able to enjoy my job throughout my career, and hope this will continue to last,” he says.

To keep himself busy outside of work, Wong is a voracious reader of books and dedicated to sports. Even better is combining the two interests by reading his Kindle while running on a treadmill. Once in a while, he dusts off his piano skills in what amounts to a spiritually healing practice for the top banker.

“I have set my target to complete my debut cross country running event and first overseas full marathon experience in the coming six months,” he says modestly.

Wong graduated with first class honours in Actuarial Science from the University of Hong Kong.

A standout aspect of Chong’s current role is her reputation for hosting exclusive client engagements, ranging from art exhibitions to watch showcases, and the recent launch of HSBC’s private banking credit card, Prive. Each of these has showcased her dedication to client servicing excellence.

Throughout her professional life, she is most inspired by the passion and creativity of the next generation of bankers. Chong believes that their approach to problem-solving serves as a reminder to stay open-minded and embrace changes.

“While I equally value the lessons from past and current managers, it’s the fresh perspectives of our younger team members that continuously remind me to stay curious and adaptable in this ever-evolving banking industry,” Chong says.

While nothing tops spending quality time with her six-year-old son, Chong finds balance outside of work through a mix of activities, ranging from working out to painting.

“Trying out new restaurants is my other passion – I’m often amazed by how simple ingredients can be transformed into something so specular using different techniques,” she says.

Having spent nearly two decades at J.P. Morgan, he draws motivation and inspiration from several aspects of the bank. These include: “The breadth and depth of our private banking platform in each local market; the trust clients place in us and the global access we have to advise clients to explore new ideas and create meaningful connections every day; and the bank’s fortress balance sheet that helps provide peace of mind to clients,” he says.
