Fidelity International

Best Fund Provider – ASEAN Equity

Madeleine Kuang

portfolio manager

“We are honoured to be named Best Fund Provider – ASEAN Equity at the 2024 Asian Private Banker Asset Management Awards for Excellence.
We believe that ASEAN is an emerging powerhouse in Asia, where Fidelity’s research resources dedicated to these regional markets underpin the in-depth search for the best opportunities. As a result, our active and differentiated approach has consistently created value for our clients, and it will be our endeavour to maintain such outcomes.”

Winnersrationale

“The FF ASEAN Fund was launched in October 1990 and invests primarily in equities of companies listed or traded in the Association of South East Asian Nations bloc. The fund invests at least 50% of its assets in securities of companies with favourable environmental, social and governance (ESG) characteristics,” said Twinkle Sparta, associate editor, Asian Private Banker.

“The fund has delivered excess returns of 1.2% and 0.1% against the benchmark (MSCI AC ASEAN Index) net of fees for the Y-ACC-USD version of the strategy for the year-to-date and 1-year periods, as of 31 August 2023. Over a longer horizon, the fund has outperformed the benchmark over three years, five years, and since its inception.

“The strategy has attracted renewed focus from private banks as they increasingly seek Asia ex-China solutions. The firm has a large and dedicated global investment network, totalling 541 investment and sustainable investing resources, which provide a significant competitive advantage in idea generation and sector/country-level analysis – particularly as ASEAN is an under-researched universe.”

Asset Management Awards for Excellence 2019 – Best Fund Provider – Asean Equity

Best Fund Provider Asean Equity

J.P. Morgan Asset Management

Best Fund Provider – Asean Equity

Pauline Ng

portfolio manager, managing director, head of ASEAN equities, Emerging Markets and Asia Pacific (EMAP) Equities, J.P. Morgan Asset Management

“J.P. Morgan Asset Management’s ASEAN Team is thrilled and honoured to receive this award for the fourth year. We believe it is testament not only to the substantial investment resources we devote on the ground within the ASEAN region but also to our broader network of analysts and portfolio managers in the Emerging Markets and Asia Pacific Equities team. We would also like to thank our private bank and wealth partners in contributing to our success and recognition.

We have had dedicated ASEAN funds since 1983 and have built one of the largest and most experienced teams in the industry. Being on the ground in ASEAN allows us to uncover local insights and understand the markets from within the region. Our investment process is driven by a combination of bottom-up stock selection and top-down allocation. The primary objective of our philosophy and process is to provide strong relative outperformance in a disciplined manner.”

Winners rationale

Of the few asset managers offering both regional and single-country ASEAN equity funds, J.P. Morgan Asset Management has retained pole position with an all-embracing product suite covering major economies in the variegated and fast-growing region, including Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The asset manager has seen continued success since entering the ASEAN funds space in 1983. Its ASEAN Equity Fund has outperformed peers by achieving first-quartile performance across various time periods — including one-year, year-to-date, and since-launch — as of end-September 2018. Further, the fund’s (acc) USD Class boasts a five-star Morningstar rating and a silver Morningstar Analyst Rating, and has delivered an annualised since-launch return of 9.3%, versus the 7% benchmark.

Included in its single-country offerings is the JPMorgan Vietnam Opportunities Fund, which bore increasing relevance in 2018 as the frontier economy continued to post robust growth while attracting foreign direct investment, garnering continued recognition from private bank clients and the asset management industry alike.

Exemplifying the asset manager’s capacity to take an active, deeper dive into nascent opportunities within the ASEAN emerging market where investors currently have little exposure, the fund has grown by 90% over the span of a year to US$339.9 million as of end-September 2018. The fund’s (acc) USD Class also attained first-quartile status by delivering strong returns of 23.9% and 196.3% for the past one and ten years, respectively, as of end-September 2018.

Managing US$1.7 trillion of assets globally, employing 1,700 professionals across eight locations in the region, and servicing 13 of Asia’s private banks, J.P. Morgan Asset Management has once again been voted Asian Private Banker’s Best Fund Provider – ASEAN Equity.
